How this review was built

We have not run a controlled bake-off of Descript against a stopwatch, and this review does not pretend otherwise. Every price and feature below is read from Descript's own published plans page and help documentation in September 2026, and quoted as those pages state it. Where a figure could be read two ways, it says so rather than picking one.

We apply the same rule to our own numbers, which are derived from our published plans rather than retyped. That matters here specifically, because Descript's pricing toggle is easy to misread. Descript's own marketing says paid plans start "from $16/month", which is the annual rate; the monthly rate is higher, and the page advertises "saving up to 35%" for annual billing.

What Descript actually is

Descript is a transcript-first editor. It ingests your recording, transcribes it, and presents the transcript as the editing surface. The video and audio follow the words.

That produces a handful of genuinely useful behaviours:

• Cut by deleting text. Removing a sentence from the transcript removes it from the video.
• Filler word removal. "Um", "uh" and long pauses can be stripped in bulk rather than hunted on a waveform.
• Voice cloning. Descript's AI Speech lets you generate speech in a clone of your own voice, which is how you fix a misspoken word without re-recording.
• Screen recording and multitrack. It records the source material as well as editing it, which matters for tutorials and remote interviews.
• Underlord, its AI layer, which the plans page positions as the gate between the cheapest paid tier and the rest.

The pitch is that a person who can edit a document can edit a video. For talking-head content, that is broadly true, and it is a different proposition from generating a presenter from a script.

Not the price. Media hours. Descript meters how much footage you upload, not how much you export, and the jump from 10 hours to 30 is what separates Hobbyist from Creator.

That is the trap most people fall into. A weekly podcast recorded with three camera angles burns media hours at three times the rate of the finished runtime. A 45-minute episode can consume well over two hours of the allowance before a single cut is made.
